Consultant in Clinical Oncology (Skin & Lung)

Job Reference: 361-R2R-1642-CON

Salary: £79,860 - £107,668

Location: Hertford, United Kingdom

Speciality: Oncology

Applications are invited for a Consultant in Clinical Oncology with a special interest in Skin & Lung Malignancies, based at the Mount Vernon Cancer Centre in Northwood, Middlesex. This is a substantive post and comprises 10 programmed activities (PAs) and an on-call commitment.

This is an excellent opportunity within the Oncology department at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust. Applications are invited for this re-organised post available immediately to provide site specific services to the local population and surrounding areas. Out-patient duties will be at the Lister Hospital and Wexham Park Hospital, with radiotherapy activity and complex SACT delivered at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre. The post holder will specialise in the management of lung and skin malignancies, joining a dynamic team of surgeons and oncologists with a significant national research reputation. The post holder would be expected to have a strong interest in technical radiotherapy and in the further development of complex radiotherapy services; including the use of stereotactic radiotherapy (SABR) in lung cancer.

Mount Vernon Cancer Centre is the largest single site cancer centre in the south of England, with 22 clinical oncologists, 6 medical oncologists, 4 cancer radiologists and 1 palliative care physician, serving 15 surrounding hospitals.

Mount Vernon Cancer Centre is a stand-alone centre. There are 22 in-patient beds which provide specialist oncology care to patients requiring in-patient support. We have an ambulatory care unit open 8 to 8, which provides support for acute oncology patients and day case supportive treatment. Specialist medical and surgical care is provided by SLAs with Hillingdon Hospital as the estate landlord, and surrounding DGH’s as required.

The Cancer Centre currently has 7 Linear accelerators (including 4 TrueBEAM machines capable of delivering rapid arc therapy) and two CT simulators. Development plans include the commissioning of MRI planning. The first Cyberknife facility in the NHS in the UK was established at Mount Vernon, which has been clinically active since 2010. The post holder would be expected to continue the further development of stereotactic radiotherapy and the delivery of SABR Lung treatments.

The Skin Cancer service is led by Dr Paul Nathan and Dr Heather Shaw. We have one of the largest melanoma practices in the country and run an extensive clinical trial portfolio both at the Mount Vernon site and UCLH. The clinical oncology post holder would join this active team, lead radiotherapy provision for melanoma and non-malanoma skin cancers and be encouraged to develop innovative clinical research activity in skin cancer.

Research opportunities are excellent within the cancer centre and at all peripheral sites.

Applicants must be on the Specialist Register, or be within 6 months of doing so, at the time of interview. Applications from those wishing to work part-time or job share are welcomed.
