Consultant in Respiratory Medicine
We have an exciting opportunity to appoint a new consultant colleague to work alongside our established collaborative Respiratory team as a Consultant Physician in Respiratory Medicine. This position is based at Worthing Hospital, part of the Western Sussex NHS Foundation Trust.
The appointee will join our engaging, innovative and forward thinking respiratory team who are working to expand our current provision of services. There are currently three consultant posts on each of the Worthing and Chichester sites. We have successfully recruited a fourth Consultant to the Chichester site (commencing January 2020) and are looking to expand our service further on the Worthing site (this post).
The department is increasingly developing sub-specialist services- these are currently Interstitial Lung Disease, Bronchiectasis, Sleep, Asthma, Cancer and pleural services and the new postholder would be encouraged to help with further development of these – we invite candidates to discuss this directly with our existing team with a view to opportunities for further service developments within their job plans. We envisage the new post holder to take a lead in one or two sub-speciality areas to progress service development; considering the applicants experience and interests.
The ongoing respiratory consultant expansion on both sites is also with a view to promoting enhanced ambulatory, domiciliary and in-reach care. We have also been successful in the local commissioning of home NIV services by NHS Sussex. It is also our aim to work towards 7 day specialist in-reach care. We run an outpatient based pleural service.
We work closely with our colleagues in Oncology and Radiology. We hold a weekly cancer MDT which is attended by our Oncologists and visiting Thoracic surgeon. We have a monthly ILD MDT.
We have an active audit programme and as a department have a focus on quality and safety.
We have funding for redevelopment of the respiratory ward and this is planned to encompass respiratory high dependency beds.
We have a well-developed (and recently appointed expansion to) specialist nursing team who support the team with subspecialty skill sets and nurse led clinics.
Western Sussex Hospitals is the first non-specialist acute trust in the country to be rated ‘Outstanding’ in all the key inspection areas assessed by the Care Quality Commission in 2019, improving upon the trust’s first ‘Outstanding’ rating from four years ago.
We are a forward looking and innovative trust whose purpose is to provide high quality emergency and elective care for the people of West Sussex. Foundation Trust Status was achieved in July 2013.
Our hospitals are all situated along the beautiful Sussex coast, nestled against the South Downs National Park, and close to vibrant towns that are richly endowed with excellent cultural and sporting facilities, offering good transport links to London and Europe.
All newly appointed Consultants are mentored, via the “WSHFT Mentorship scheme for senior medical staff”.
Applicants must be on the GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of attaining Specialist Registration at the time of interview. Applications from candidates who, for personal reasons, are unable to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for this post.
All applicants are required to provide the names and contact details of a minimum of three clinical referees including one from the current employer (or most recent employer if not currently working).
Please note shortlisted applicants will be asked to provide an up to date CV for their interview
Applications from Agencies will NOT be considered, therefore please do not send any directly to the department or Medical HR
