DEPARTMENT OF ORTHOPAEDICS

LOCUM CONSULTANT in PAEDIATRIC ORTHOPAEDICS

This is an exciting opportunity to join our friendly, enthusiastic and innovative team of paediatric orthopaedic surgeons within a leading tertiary paediatric centre, rated outstanding by the Care Quality Commission. The Paediatric Orthopaedic team at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (BWCH) provide secondary level general paediatric orthopaedic services to the children and young people of Birmingham, and tertiary care to those in the wider region and beyond. In addition, we support the care of children with complex health needs, working closely with colleagues from other specialties.

Birmingham Children’s Hospital, where this post is based, is the Paediatric Major Trauma Centre for the West Midlands. The department has recently welcomed the arrival of colleagues from the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital Paediatric Orthopaedic Oncology Service and seen a four-fold expansion in the number of Paediatric Spinal Deformity patients coming through the unit. The latter are managed by our Paediatric Spinal Deformity colleagues who are also based at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital.

This post is to provide maternity cover. You will be joining a team of six established consultants. Our team includes two foundation year doctors, four Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioners, four orthopaedic middle grade trainees from the Birmingham Orthopaedic Training Program, a Trust Grade doctor, two Paediatric Orthopaedic Fellows, and a CESR trainee from an adjacent region

We are seeking fellowship trained candidates well versed in the generality of Paediatric Orthopaedics and Paediatric Orthopaedic Trauma. Preference will be given to candidates who can demonstrate sub-speciality training in the orthopaedic management of neuromuscular conditions.

The successful candidates will be expected to support the service at BCH and at both the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital and Heartlands Hospital at which we provide out-reach services.

Birmingham Women’s & Children’s NHS Foundation Trust was formed in February 2017 by the integration of Birmingham Children’s and Birmingham Women’s Hospitals. The organisation also hosts child and adolescent mental health services, including an inpatient psychiatric unit and community mental health services for young people. The Trust is a leading teaching and research institution and partner of all the city’s universities.

The Paediatric Orthopaedic team provides secondary care including outpatient, urgent care and inpatient services to a catchment population of 450,000, representing approximately 45% of the population of the City of Birmingham. We also support the holistic care of children with complex needs who are under the care of colleagues in other specialties. Our clinical work offers huge diversity, encompassing the full breadth of paediatric orthopaedics, including both elective and trauma, with the only exception currently of pelvic fracture fixation.

We pride ourselves on the high quality of our clinical care, leadership, quality improvement and innovation, pastoral development of a multi-professional team and – above all – on our team-working and cohesion.

Applicants should possess FRCS (Tr & Orth) or equivalent, be registered with the General Medical Council and be eligible for inclusion in the Specialist Register, or be within 6 months of this, at the time of interview. The successful applicants would start as soon as possible, after appointment. Applications would also be welcomed from senior trainees with a proven interest in a career in Paediatric Orthopaedics who are currently in the middle of, or about to leave for, Fellowships and who wish to complete these to further their experience before joining our unit.
