Applications are invited for the Post of Specialty Doctor in Diagnostic Radiology, full-time.  This is a new Post being offered within the Department which demonstrates commitment to supporting continued development of doctors. Duties will include consulting and reporting a wide range of general Acute and specialist elective work including MRI and ultrasound.

The Directorate of Diagnostic Imaging compromises of Radiology Departments at both Acute sites, Sunderland Royal Hospital and South Tyneside District Hospital with links to Medical Physics departments also located on both sites.  The Departments cover all aspects of Acute adult radiology and paediatric diagnostic investigations. The Departments are busy teaching units with a total of four CT scanners (64 and 128 slice), three MRI scanners (one Wide Bore, one normal and one state-of-the-art at STDH) and seven ultrasound rooms across the Acute sites with an additional three peripheral ultrasound rooms.  Sunderland Royal Hospital additionally has a newly-opened (October 2019) Vascular Interventional Suite with two interventional rooms available for vascular and non-vascular work.

We currently employ 18 substantive Consultants with cross-site working.  With special interests in Paediatrics, MSK, GI, Gynaecology, Chest, Urology, Head & Neck, Neuroradiology and Intervention.

This friendly and busy Directorate provides all aspects of Acute and elective general diagnostic radiology to a population of approximately 600,000 and sub-regional Urology, ENT and Vascular radiological service to a population of 900,000. South Tyneside and Sunderland Foundation Trust (STSFT) has recently became one merged organisation in April 2019 and includes the Sunderland Eye Infirmary.

The Directorate is dynamic and forward thinking.  Education, innovation, change, clinical effectiveness and efficiency are integral to the planning and development process within the Directorate.  There has been a major recent increase in commitment to regional specialist registrar training and the Trust currently enjoys the training of 12 SpRs of all levels.
