A 4-hour course engaging healthcare professionals in skill-based sessions to develop their polarity perception and mapping skills. The course contains real-time interactive lectures and Moodle based assignments.
Polarity management is a framework that involves identifying and managing ‘polarities’ in an organization. Polarities, or dilemmas, consist of two opposing but interdependent and ongoing scenarios. For example; an organization attempting to increase innovation whilst also attempting to increasing efficiency. Unlike ‘problems’, polarities cannot be solved and do not consist of a right or wrong answer – both sides of the polarity are correct and should not be considered an ”either/or” circumstance.
Polarities exist in every sector, with healthcare being no exception.
As polarities represent an unsolvable situation, polarity management does not search for a solution but rather a framework for managing and balancing both poles. Balancing of the poles is necessary to avoid a situation where one side of the polarity is focused on too much and consequently undermines the efforts of the other. One way in which polarity management does this is by the creation of ‘polarity maps’. These maps are a visual representation of the advantages and disadvantages of each pole in order provide an overall picture of both sides whilst enabling prediction of how one pole will impact the other. Polarity management allows organizations to effectively manage polarities and maintain successful outcomes from their management.
